Military terms

Today’s reading on the feeding of the 5000 in Matthew had me thinking about Luke’s version where some translations say that the people were instructed to sit in companies of fifty. This has puzzled me. Today I wondered if this word could be translated as “course” rather than “company” to give it a priestly flavor rather than a military flavor.

I quickly determined this to be a dead end. It seems that a number of my recent ideas were not worthy of publication but I decided to make an exception and mention this one as my only mistake.
